As the long, dark, and frigid arctic winter approaches, the native animals hastily prepare for the harsh season. Tuktuk, the collared lemming, is diligently working to ready his nest, needing only warm fur to line it. Serendipitously, Tuktuk stumbles upon a discarded furry kamik (boot) that has fallen from an Inuit driver's sled, providing the perfect insulation for his burrow.
However, Tuktuk's good fortune does not go unnoticed by the other arctic creatures. Putak the polar bear, Aput the arctic fox, and Masak the caribou all covet the warm kamik for their own use, and they set their sights on Tuktuk's prize. In a tense standoff, the smaller lemming must use his wits to outwit the larger predators and convince them that the single furry kamik holds no value for anyone larger than a lemming.
This enchanting fictional tale, "Tuktuk: un cuento sobre la tundra," not only entertains young readers but also educates them about the harsh realities of life in the Arctic tundra. The story is complemented by a 4-page "For Creative Minds" section at the end of the book, as well as a 34-page cross-curricular Teaching Activity Guide available online.
Expertly vetted by subject matter experts, "Tuktuk" is designed to encourage parental engagement and promote learning. The extensive back matter provides teachers with time-saving lesson ideas, extensions for science, math, and social studies units, and inquiry-based activities to help build critical thinking skills in young readers.
The Spanish translation of the book supports English Language Learners (ELL) and dual-language programs, while the enhanced ebook version offers read-aloud functionality in both English and Spanish. The word highlighting and audio speed control features promote oral language skills, fluency, pronunciation, text engagement, and reading comprehension.
